But in LAAX it does. The resort does still offer a wide range of traditional Swiss and regional restaurants, though. The concept is simple: a scruffily hip mountain hut where freestylers congregate to refuel on big bowls of soup, foot-long sarnies and coffee — its latte macchiato is considered to be the best of its kind above 2000 metres.
Though the nosh, really, is secondary: it is the sun-trap terrace, with its cool tunes playing over the speakers and unrivalled views of the half-pipes and snowparks around Crap Sogn Gion, they come for. On any blue sky day, from 12pm to 4pm, you are guaranteed to see a crowd of people sitting on the wall checking out the pipe action below. Located underneath the cable-car station at Crap Masegn, where piste bashers were once kept, Das Elephant is the place for long lunches — white tablecloths, sheepskins rugs thrown over the chairs, sweeping views of the surrounding peaks and divine food. You can expect fresh oysters daily and dishes like Argentinian entrecote with ratatouille risotto and pasta with Parmesan cheese, fresh truffle oil and Grappa brandy. During the summer of 1992, an elephant made a four-day guest appearance on the Crap Sogn Gion for a circus performance as part of the Crap Art cultural event.

LAAX OPEN 2024
This process began on the 1. Nov 2023 and ended on the 20th of December 2023. The results were published mid January 2024. In addition, the best Swiss Athletes were automatically qualified, because the competition takes place in Switzerland, the funding is solely from Switzerland and the public viewers and audience are mostly Swiss.
Some Swiss athletes also have a double role, acting as active volunteers at the event helping with onsite organization, rigging, logistics and communication. How do we define the total number of athletes invited? We must provide training and acclimatization sessions of about 40 min each we are at 2263m asl , and qualification takes around 15 min per athlete The cost of inviting and accommodating athletes approx averaging at 1500 euros per athlete In 2022, 31 Athletes were present and we managed to complete the event within schedule with perfect weather.
Laax 2024 invitations have been increased to 42, this will be a huge challenge, requiring 18-20 hour work days over 4-5 days for the judges, organisation team and riggers. In the case of bad weather, the training and acclimatization time will be limited, unfortunately diminishing the quality of the athlete performances. In other words, every minute on the lines from the morning sunrise to evening is planned out during this event and there is simply not enough time to accommodate more athletes.
This is not the case for slacklining given that the structures around the world are not in place yet — this is a huge burden to cover for the organizers, since we want the best from around the world onsite. Typically events of this magnitude in other sports also require a participation fee. We do not want money to be a hindering factor for joining and therefore do not impose any fees.
On the contrary, in order to have the best slackliners present at the event, the organizers help with co-funding the travel of athletes who request assistance. For South Americans, who are at the largest financial disadvantage for such an event in Europe, a special crowdfunding is being initiated by the organizers, all the collected money from the crowdfunding will be proportionally distributed to the athletes and one judge from south america. We invite the maximum number of athletes given our organizational constraints and we do not consider inviting extra athletes on the basis that they pay for their entry as this would disadvantage athletes without the means to do so.
Why are more male than female athletes invited? The number of male and female athletes invited to Laax is a reflection of the relative participation in our sport.

But now, having the possibility to go and be a part of it is like a dream come true. It is a big ass event, organized perfectly and the biggest names in snowboarding are in the resort for it. Rene and Dusty... Who were the riders that impressed you the most? The creative guys like Dusty Henricksen and Rene Rinnekangas who change up the game in slopestyle all the time with crazy axises and so much style. But there are also riders who stay true to the good old stylish tricks that never get old. Kaishu is a good example. The first time that I saw him was at Hell Week in Crans Montana and he just blew my mind with a backside air three times as big as every body else. He had a full face mask, fast sun glasses and this new era punk style that I love in snowboarding.
Danny Davis brought that one back, but now Scotty has really taken it to a new level. But I have to say that I was the most surprised by Valentino Guseli, who just delivered! Riding so much intense slopestyle and halfpipe in the same week is just mind blowing.
The Swiss decided the race for herself and only Daubermann could stay with her. Not only did she miss the stage podium, but she also had to watch her lead in the overall standings shrink to just over a minute. With one stage to go, the overall standings are still completely open.
This years level of riding progressed again, and you really had to take your best shot and ride away as clean as possible with the most insane tricks at a breathtaking height above the icy coping. The Asian riders unleashed a feast of rotations: 10er, 12er and 14er combos without end and triple flips back to back, but the hero of the evening, once again following 2019 and 2020, was Scotty James with his insane switch mctwist chickenwing intro,... The LAAX crows celebrates him like a local, because he almost is.
Second place on the day with a score of 78. With a second run that included a switch on to left 450 Japan out on the kicker rail, a right corked 900 Buick on the batwing jump, and a left double cork 1080 safety to Japan on the final jump, Gu would earn her 11th straight World Cup podium, giving her 17 World Cup top-3s in 20 career starts. While Birk Ruud came into the 2024 Laax Open with three podiums so far this season, all three of those results were third-place finishes. Ruud lead off his 87.

U.S. Snowboard Pro Team member Taylor Gold rounded out the podium at the 2020 Laax Open halfpipe finals in third place by landing the first-ever double Michalchuk 1080 in snowboard halfpipe. It has been an epic five-year battle returning from a shattered knee cap, but now the world knows Taylor Gold is back. Snowboard team rider Chase Blackwell finished in a respectable sixth place, followed U. Rookie Team rider Jason Wolle in seventh.
Switch dub 9 true nose down the pipe was a beauty, and his style was next level. Birk put together a super clean run but not particularly exciting, he did go dub 1440, dub 1620, switch dub 18 on the jumps though, and took the lead. Alex Hall had a trademark super creative run including a switch butter lip 2 up top and a nosebutter dub 10 on the shark fun, but he did come off a smidge early on the first rail. Run 2: Konnor Ralph put one down in run two, switch 4 onto the waterfall, 4 on 6 out on the goalpost, solid jumps 16 to switch 14 , and switch 7 in the QP... Andri put down a heater again but again, the last rail got him, missing the p2p. The booth was calling it the heartbreaker for a reason, which is extra wild because it was a basic fat tube.
It did do enough to bump him above Max Moffat though... Max absolutely laced it on the second time of asking. Cleaned up the switch 4 up top, put down the dub bio 14 japan super nice. Enough to marginally overtake Birk with style for days. Birk put it down again perfectly though, the switch dub 18 was crazy deep.

The grand finale came with a breathtaking right flatspin 540 on the quarterpipe, where Moffat soared to new heights, claiming the title for the largest air of the day. The judges were clearly impressed, awarding Moffat a well-deserved score of 85. Setting the tone right out of the gate with a massive Sw 4 on and grabbing the attention of the judges and peers alike.
