They were tired of playing the hits, and they wanted to give their fans something special. Of course, that was never the case. In the weeks leading up to the show, the band was breaking up, producers were freaking out, and Cobain was doing his best to stay clean. Cross dropped some very heavy info on the audience. Specifically, he claimed Cobain was still using at the time of the recording and that he was suffering from withdrawals prior to performing. The author explains that Cobain was very sick just prior to the show and he was "struggling that day with withdrawals.
Cross claims that "someone from MTV" bought Cobain benzodiazepines to help soothe his symptoms, and that "MTV on their dime went and bought [banned medication] from a corrupt pharmacist so Kurt could go onstage and perform. Throughout rehearsals for Unplugged, no one was sure if Grohl would be able to play softly. In the end, Coletti gave the sticks to Grohl in Christmas wrapping paper in an effort to not offend the rock star. Cross, prior to recording Unplugged, the band was falling apart at the seams. Cross encapsulated the show by saying, "The truth was that Nirvana was essentially over by the end of 1993 anyways. We did a few rehearsals and they were terrible. Even the people from MTV thought it was horrible.
Unbeknownst to fans and even the members of the group, they would be done only 8 months later. In January of 1994, the band reassembled in the studio, but those sessions proved unfruitful. It was originally planned to be a 3 month trek that would see them play across the entire continent until April 8th. Kurt Cobain had been struggling with heroin addiction for the previous 3 years and he was finding it difficult to find his drug of choice in Europe which resulted in him going through painful withdrawals while on tour. Adding to the problems for him, his wife and daughter were back home and Kurt was feeling lonely. The rigors of touring were taking a toll on his voice and physical health.

And they were waiting for us when we came out in the lobby. And we all just kind of kept going. Finnerty: Because of the immediacy of their fame and success, it put them in a self-inflicted but uncomfortable position, in that they were suddenly a much bigger band than their predecessors. They were a much bigger band than the bands they had put up on a pedestal. He was truly falling apart. Physically, mentally. Finnerty: I was in my 20s. I was a kid walking these other kids through this experience. Because it was very difficult. One person can talk to Kurt.
No one else can talk to Kurt. What is he doing? And no one walked off the set. I can give him what he wants. We were walking on thin ice with Unplugged when they saw that we were using an acoustic guitar with electric guitar pickups, through several electric guitar pedals, and into an electric guitar amp. Bailey: It took a bit of negotiation. You know, little things that would lighten his touch. And it was close enough to Christmas that I put Christmas paper on it and I walked in. He walked away.
I knew if I could get the bass run down, it would bring it all together. I sat for a half hour and played it over and over again, and I got it locked in. At that moment, I felt like I was off the clock and that it was time take a deep breath. Rob Galluzzo fan : Where you would find like-minded individuals, or even just cool stuff that related to what you loved, was the back of magazines. There was no internet yet. I recall it being the back of a Spin magazine. There was a tiny, tiny ad that just said Nirvana Fan Club, and it was a P. I just completely forgot about it. Galluzzo: I had to have my brother take me.
It was hilarious because I was maybe one of about 10 kids that did this, and we all had parents [as chaperones]. They all had to go to a waiting room while we went to the show itself. It was really funny. Finnerty: I remember that Kurt wanted to make sure to have some time to kind of connect with the fans before he played. And so he asked me to take him outside and walk him around the block. It was a giant building. Finnerty: Of course there were people lined up around the block. It seemed like a dozen people waiting to get into this somewhat secretive show. Sullivan-Kaplan: When I was waiting in line to get in, Dave Grohl happened to be talking to the girl behind me, and he could see how excited I was about the gig.
He was really friendly. Chiusano: Kate Moss was there. He was a nice guy. We had a little group of friends that hung out. I was assigned to fend people off from this spot that he might want to use. So I pretty much sat right next to her. Sullivan-Kaplan: The singer of the band Half Japanese took pity on me. David Galea fan : You can see me on the cover of the record, because I wore a white T-shirt. I do remember someone in a black one.
Not a bad night out for a teenager, right? There was kind of this hush. McCarthy-Miller: The design, all the flowers and candles and stuff, were all things that Kurt really, really wanted on the set. No way. But it was still kind of strangely relaxed. I remember getting in, and I saw Dave Grohl wandering around with a beer in his hand. Peter Baron head of video production, Geffen Records : I have a vision of a moment of walking into the sort of green room or whatever it was, and Kurt was sitting there with Bobcat Goldthwait, like literally together. And I kind of did the wave and they looked at me. Kurt had a game face.
Goldthwait: I definitely did feel often that it would just be him and I, kind of a little bit of padding between him and the world. Stillerman: They just respectfully but not ambiguously declined to do that. They obviously had a very clear vision of what they wanted to do. And they were secure in that, and it turned out to be incredibly right. Curt Kirkwood: We were walking toward the playing area from backstage, and I was talking to Kurt and I was recalling when I was little. My mom would take me to a restaurant. There were all these different colors of gum stuck underneath the table. I used to disappear under there, find my favorite color, pry it off, and chew it. And I was allowed to get away with it.
It was one of my favorite things when I was little. Oh, it was blue, and red, and orange. Bailey: I recall feeling the tension of a high-wire act. Finnerty: They were really nervous. Novoselic : We went into it so nervous and shaky. I was so concerned about fire, and the fire marshal was getting kind of antsy about the candles. I was putting sand on the stage. If something fell over, at least it would fall onto sand. Litt: I really believe that after the first song, and the reception they got, that they settled in.

Kurt Cobain had been struggling with heroin addiction for the previous 3 years and he was finding it difficult to find his drug of choice in Europe which resulted in him going through painful withdrawals while on tour. Adding to the problems for him, his wife and daughter were back home and Kurt was feeling lonely. The rigors of touring were taking a toll on his voice and physical health. The band had upcoming dates in late March for Manchester, Glasgow as well as 4 nights at Brixton Academy in London before finishing up the tour in Dublin, Ireland on April 8th. According to the book, Nirvana FAQ, ahead of the gig, possibly after scoring, Kurt allegedly got involved in a fight with his wife over the phone and called his lawyer, as he reportedly wanted a divorce.
Grunge is dead.
According to producers, when Kurt Cobain said he was going to have musical guests, everyone expected Eddie Vedder to show up for a duet. Photo: MTV The Actual Filming Was Really Fun The show may have been immortalized as a serious piece of art and the perfect finale for Nirvana, but at the time of filming, everyone was fairly laid back. According to people at the show, the only time the band was really stressed was right before they played, but they settled into a groove after the first song and the show was a lot of fun.
Journalist Gillian Gaar , who was in attendance for the performance, said, "In the TV edit, it just seems more somber and serious, but in between [songs] you could see them laughing and making jokes. Nirvana not only avoided their biggest hits , but also crafted a set with an elegant flow. Musically, the band took chances, adding a cellist, changing the arrangement of "Pennyroyal Tea," and performing six cover songs - five of which were essentially unknown to broader audiences. Initially, producers asked if the band wanted to change the key of the song or if Cobain wanted to use a capo a tool that raises the pitch of a guitar , but Cobain said that he wanted to reach for the notes. Some of the producers thought this was "nerve-wracking," but he was actually pleased with the performance. The only request Cobain made was that they keep in a shot of him smiling at the end.

According to the top comment on the YouTube video — which has over 300,000 views — Cobain had apparently had the woman who was assaulted come backstage after the show so the musician could make sure she was okay.

Then I knew when I was supposed to go on. We had done a live rehearsal there at the stage before. By the time we got on it was a really good show.
It was just going great so it was pretty normal. Nirvana played 14 songs, but producers wanted a little more from the band. He declined, feeling he had left everything on the stage.
Life was weighing down on him, and putting on an acoustic performance for the first time only added pressure. While the audience was filled with both run-of-the-mill fans and celebrities Kate Moss was allegedly in attendance , Cobain made sure people he knew were sitting in the front row. Pearl Jam performed in front of velvet curtains, and Alice In Chains illuminated their stage with purple lights.
