Another thing I noticed on this first special test and more through some of the steep climbs was just how good the anti-squat geometry is. You can really get on the gas hard uphill and the front-end just stays planted, allowing you to accelerate harder for longer instead of worrying about having to control the front wheel lift. Reaching the end of our time on the two-strokes, we were faced with a steep, challenging and rock descent. I was still equipped with the 300 EXC at this point, and I feel got an appreciation for how good the Brembo braking system is for feel and control as I carefully made my way downhill. Reflecting on the loop and its challenges, my general feeling is that these bikes made it easier than what it should have been for someone at my level by no means a professional enduro or off-road rider. The new ergonomics across the range boast an increased area of contact and made each bike quite comfortable to control in a variety of settings, and like with the four-strokes, the tank appearing to stick out past the radiator shrouds presented no such issue while riding on the EXCs. The front-end of the 250 EXC is amazing, and the 300 EXC shares many of the characteristics of the latter with that bit of extra punch. If I had to pick one, it would be the 300 EXC for its sheer versatility, and extra power, because for me, it was the most enjoyable to ride.

This change up is supposed to have a few clever benefits in terms of performance, but in the main the new system is simply supposed to make life easier for the typical off-road rider when refuelling. With the separate oil injection you get the benefits of the modern TBI system whilst not having to mess about with premix. You can just roll up to a fuelling station mid-ride, fill her up and crack on. It appears as though KTM have really put a lot of thought into making these machines as user friendly as possible, which makes the decision to remove kickstarts completely a little contentious. No matter where you stand on this debate KTM have quite obviously deemed the kickstart obsolete and have complete faith and trust in their electric starters to get you going out in the wilderness. It did everything you wanted it to. You could pop the front wheel up very easily when you needed to get over stuff, it was just great! This might explain why I felt that the 150 struggled with the terrain we were on, you needed instant power off the bottom to get over the rocks or up an incline.

With the plastics working to expel mud buildup in wet, muddy conditions, a flat seat profile with a high grip seat cover providing exceptional rider movement and control, and a polyamide-reinforced aluminum subframe providing unmatched rider feel and feedback, your only concern is navigating the terrain ahead of you. This has been achieved by repositioning the rotating masses in the frame and the inclusion of a forged steering head connection. New parallel frame mounts also improve flex characteristics, while the footrest mounts have also moved inwards, slimming things down. And when the ride comes to an end, a completely redesigned forged one-piece side stand ensured things your enduro weapon stands proud. With the help of computational dynamics, a specific rigidity was engineered into the subframe, to deliver outstanding handling and rider feedback. The new subframe is also shorter, more compact, and more robust than the previous generation, with the ability to bend and flex in the event of a crash, rather than break. The subframe fully integrates the electronic components, without any extra need for brackets, holders, or unnecessary fixtures. Providing fast and consistent damping, optimized oil flow, and a new hydro stop in the last 68 mm of the stroke, the forks ensure unmatched performance at any level. New fork protection rings also provide improved protection against dirt intrusion. Best of all, the new fork allows for full adjustment of compression and rebound without the need for any tools.

Almost instantly, I switched to the green map on the 150 EXC, the sheer elevation and obstacles faced required all of the power that the platform could muster. The elevation made the 150 EXC — and all of the models within the two-stroke range — feel quite flat in the top-end, but the torque and bottom end on the smallest capacity bike in the range was still enough to have a lot of fun, especially in the tighter sections. For the first five kilometres or so, we faced a gradual and relatively simple, high-speed climb to our initial obstacles, and I used this as an opportunity to get a feel for the different maps, white soft and green aggressive. I instantly felt an increase in power from the bottom-end to mid-range, with the better pull through the low and mid-range carrying over to the early stages of the top-end. Also in the early moments of the ride, I had to chance to test the handling characteristics of the 250 EXC on some wider, moderate-speed turns, ranging from banked to flat and even off-camber. The 250 EXC felt very planted when accelerating or braking into a variety of turns, and I later noticed how the anti-squat concept in the geometry really excelled as we transitioned into our first steep climb and obstacles. Towards the end of my initial stint on the 250 EXC, we were faced with some technical hard rock climbs. Despite an extended period with my left hand on the clutch, it never fatigued thanks to the lightweight nature of the Brembo hydraulic system used on the 2024 KTM EXC range. The clutch was incredible throughout the entire two-stroke enduro range, and notably lighter than on the four-strokes.

As the output has increased, you can hold on to the engine until it screams for help. The performance of the genuine Brembo brake system is also satisfactory. The appropriate pressure steadily rises to the maximum braking force. The idea was to tackle it in earnest after lunch, when I had the most energy. A clear difference from the previous model is the engine stability at low rpm. When I operate the throttle at very low rpm, power is delivered immediately and it moves lightly in the direction I want. This is what I felt when first test driving the 4-stroke models. The main frame is solid and the suspension damping is exquisitely set. The section where the power band explodes is still thrilling. I am overwhelmed by the fast acceleration and torque that makes it scary to use anything higher than 3rd gear. The current driving speed and gear position are not that important, and the front wheels are ready to come up at any time with just a flick of the clutch. In other words, if you use the throttle gently and have the stamina to handle the power, the 300 EXC TBI could be the fastest on any course. The clear difference in output compared to the 300 EXC TBI is likely to be a point that eases the burden on most riders. Of course, if grunting torque was mainly used in the low rpm range, it would be more uncomfortable for riders who like hard enduro courses. Personally, I drove at high speeds and single roads repeatedly for quite a long time and had fun without stressing about power output. Perhaps because I previously tested a very powerful model, the exhaust sound and output were very cute. No matter how you open the throttle, there is no power until the power band explodes. It churns along, but when it passes the power band section, it runs away making a loud noise. In other words, it is good to ride the bike that much harder. There is no burden even if you explode the power band in second gear and hold the throttle all the way to top gear. It is perfect for beginners and experts alike to learn bold throttle work. What surprised me was the light movement while going uphill. So far, we have been considering the power output, but there is another area where the lightness of the 150 EXC TBI benefits. Since the peak power is insufficient compared to the higher model, the position is changed more actively.

Again, I found them all to be very impressive but for me the 350 came out on top. It just did everything I wanted it to. I ended up turning off traction control and riding most of the day in map two and it was just awesome, much like the 250 two-stroke you were able to pop the front wheel up on command. It had that bottom end pop, but it would also lug up a long hill nicely as well. It was a pleasure to ride and I really did enjoy my time on the 350.
