Chip maker AMD is outlining its product roadmap for the next few years as part of the company’s Financial Analyst Day, giving us a sneak peek at the what to expect from the Zen 4 chips that are set. The roadmap also shows a timeline for AMD's Raphael desktop chips, though AMD had already confirmed that line. AMD also confirmed that its next GPU microarchitecture, codenamed RDNA 3, will allow for a chiplet-based modular GPU design and will use a 5nm manufacturing process.
AMD Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 processors teased for 2023 in updated roadmap
The X3D packaging technique will be used to combine chiplets and 3D stacking, all connected with its Infinity Fabric architecture. That Infinity Architecture will also improve, with 3rd-gen products rolling out by 2022 with up to 8-way GPU and coherent connectivity. This means AMD can save cost by removing those elements and add more gates that help datacenter performance like tensor OPS. I believe AMD can field a high performance datacenter GPU, but it will need to invest at least as much in software to complete the solution.
Zen forms the foundation of the Ryzen processors. Having secured desktop PC share of about 17 percent, AMD also has its eye trained on the mobile space, with its mobile Ryzen chips aimed squarely at the notebook space and especially commercial PCs.

Again, at constant clocks. The Turin family comes in 2024 with the Zen 5 cores, and McNamara said to expect the full complement of CPU types of general purpose, cloud native, technical, and telco. The Genoa processor will have memory encryption on both DDR5 and any CXL-attached memory, and will have more than 75 percent higher performance on Java compared to the Milan Epyc 7003 with 64 cores. Ditto for Siena, which is a Zen 4 CPU with up to 64 cores, but optimized to deliver the best performance per watt and the lowest cost as well as to be suitable for edge and telco uses. We will get into fuller comparisons when the H100s ship, and are priced, later this year. The rumor has been that the MI300 would cram four GPU chiplets onto a single package, offering at least 2X more throughput than the MI250X at double precision floating point. But Wang did not talk about that in his GPU presentation. Meaning, either device can access the same memory on the device at the same time — with appropriate controls over which device is controlling the writing of data to memory, much as happens in NUMA devices. Importantly, there is no copying of data between the CPU and the GPU so they can do their work — they both to do their work in the same physical memory.

A key technology is Modern Standby, with five times the number of laptops now supporting the technology versus the prior generation, Bergman said. Chip Roadmaps Unfold, Crisscrossing And Interconnecting, At AMD
A purported roadmap posted on Twitter shows that AMD has no plans to replace the Ryzen Threadripper 5000 before the end of 2023, but has yet to announce its successor. AMD says in the roadmap that Zen 4 will be manufactured on a 5nm process, but in addition to that also on 4nm technology. This is a surprise, because the Ryzen 7000 and Epyc 7004 both Bergamo with Zen 4c and Genoa with standard Zen 4 are definitely 5nm according to previous officially communicated information. But it does mean that these processors will benefit from slightly better silicon properties. We will also see the basic Zen 5, a version with 3D V-Cache and a Zen 5c core with reduced die area and improved efficiency.
According to AMD, processors with Zen 5 cores will be manufactured on 4nm and 3nm process. So again there is a mix of technologies, but here it has more significant consequences, because they are no longer derivatives of the same generation. What is important for Zen 5 is that it will again be a major upgrade of the architecture. One could say that it will be a fundamentally new core, although this is not entirely accurate, because even these new cores take over some elements and techniques from the previous ones.
Sometimes it may mean fixing bugs found in the previous core, or implementing features that were planned for the original core but were late and missed the deadline. These evolutionary architectures should typically yield less dramatic changes and smaller IPC increases. Zen 1 and Zen 3 were the representative of the first case of new cores, and Zen 5 will be the next new one, so we can expect a lot from it. Zen 2 and Zen 4, on the other hand, represent those evolutionary architectures.
Accordingly, AMD has previously said that although it also expects good results from Zen 4, Zen 5 will be a bigger deal than Zen 4, relatively speaking. Mike Clark, one of the chief architects of Zen core development, some time ago indicated that he thought Zen 5 was the most exciting generation yet.
These CPUs will use 4nm and 3nm processes. A 4th-gen Infinity Architecture interconnect standard will allow AMD to integrate third-party chiplets allowing for heterogenous platforms and increased customisability for clients. AMD sees growth in PC, console and cloud gaming as well as interactive metaverse applications and 3D content creation.
