One such early crime happened when he used his half-brother, Andre, to rob a shopkeeper for him.
In 1963, he served his first jail sentence for burglary at Poissy prison near Paris. At Poissy prison, while others in jail lived in bad conditions, he manipulated his prison officials into granting him special favors such as keeping books in his cell.
